True Beauty

March 26, 2014

In a dingy diner
Her rough smile
Illuminated the room
The grey hair
Not quite in order
But distinguished
Pulled back
As she sipped
A cup of black coffee
And did the local crossword
Her gruff voice
From years of smoking
Croaked out
“I may not be beautiful
But I sure as hell understand
Beauty gets destroyed
Intelligence lasts a lifetime”
